Easy recipes for cooking with kids

Oct 30, 2012 8 Comments by

I keep repeating myself, all the time, everytime I post a recipe – that theres a lot of cooking me and 3 year old Zoey do together. Now we are not talking about making curry or dal, but cooking chores that the kiddo can actually do. And aptly so, Mommygyan is a parenting blog, I had to share these recipes.

A lot of these recipes are desserts, and can make great Diwali sweets, kids would love to make.

Have you seen MasterChef Australia Junior? Arent those kids awesome. Before you ask me , let me assure you I am not raising a chef. But cooking is a great bonding time that my 3 year old enjoys to the core . Besides its a great exercise for fine motor skills, and co ordination

Sure it gets messy, but whisking the eggs, playing with the dough, pouring water in the food processor, making her own pizza, making her own sandwich, filling up cupcakes, making cookie batter, and theres lot more she does, enjoys it thorougly!

I can go on, about what we do at home, but let me cut short and give away some tips on how you could involve kids in the kitchen, trust me, they love to cook!

1 . Easy Peasy Marie Biscuit Truffles

I am inspired by Little Food Junction. And this is my take on easy, really easy truffles.

This recipe just needs 4 ingredients

Condensed milk

cocoa powder

marie biscuit 1 packet or less

dessicated coconut 1/2 cup

cocoa powder 1/3 cup

Method

Crush marie biscuit and place in mixing bowl

Add cocoa and coconut, stir together then add condensed milk

Mix the mass, help the kid if the mass gets difficult to manage

Ask kids to roll into balls.

Refrigerate for 30 mins. Your easy truffles are ready

Here I used the recipe minus the coconut. And I used gems for nose, chocos for ears. Sprinkler for eyes ;)

2. Easy Mini pizza for kids

We do this all the time , the kid volunteers to assemble the pizzas

You would need

Whole wheat readymade mini pizza bases. I personally love the ones available at Nature’s Basket. The best so far!

Premade pizza sauce (Recipe coming up soon)

Grated Mozarella

sliced tomatoes

Method

Preheat the oven at 220 deg Celcius

Ask kids to assemble the pizzas.

Smear your regular pizza/cookie sheet with a little olive oil

Arrange the mini pizzas on pizza pan

Bake at 220 deg C for 8-10 mins

3. Easy Peasy chocolate chip cookies

This  is the go- to cookie recipe if I am making with my daughter.

You will need

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1 3/4 cups  flour (maida)

1 tsp baking powder

1 cup  chocolate chips

 Method

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C .

In a mixing bowl mix butter sugar and vanilla extract, till well incorporated

Add egg. Mix

Add the dry ingredients.

Spoon onto cookie sheet, with distance between them since they flatten as they bake.

Bake  for 8-10 mins at 180 deg C, cool on wire rack.

Store in airtight container once completely cooled.

4. Worlds Easiest Chocolate cake recipe

Okay, I dont remember the source, must be some old book. But I remember hunting for the easiest chocolate cake recipe that Zoey (age 3) could make with very little assistance !

Here it goes

1 cup all purpose  flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt
1 cup caster sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
125g butter, melted
½ cup milk

Method

Throw all of this in a large bowl, and use an electric mixer to mix. Mix until everything is well incorporated. You could even use a food processor.

Preheat the oven at 180 deg C.

Pour batter in 8 ” prepared pan and bake for around 40 mins.

Dust cooled with powdered sugar if u wish!

Can it get easier than this??

Oh nice! All the recipes look lip smacking especially the truffles. Lil Zoey is definitely growing up to be a great chef. We also make cupcakes, mini pizzas, cakes, pasta and cookies together. It definitely is more messy but SO much FUN!!

Aha, getting Zoey ready to help around and also make her interested in both eating and cooking . Yes, Poonam, it is good to let kids get involved in all things so that they learn so many things in the process. That will help them really.

Loved going thru the post – I feel the best part of cooking with & for lil ones are all their wonderful exclamations & expressions that we get to see while they relish the treats.

Yes Smita, you are so right! But sometimes its difficult to put on food what she imagines it to be, yesterday she wanted crackers on her cupcake, and so I am learning how to make fancy royal icing decorations and toppers! Your halloween post was too cute!

You are right. Catch them young is best for them. That is exactly what I did with Ruby. But it does need some extra work for the mommy!! Go ahead & enjoy the myriad hues of “mothering”!!
